Settings and campaigns

A setting is a world. The person who creates it is its author; they can invite co-authors to help write it. A setting has its own Campaign Journal and in-world calendar.

To start one, open Campaigns and choose New setting.

A setting can have several campaigns, each a group playing in that world. The setting’s author creates campaigns and assigns each one a DM (themselves or someone else). The DM adds players.

A setting’s author can also play: add yourself as a player in a campaign another person runs, and bring a character in.

Each campaign chooses:

  • Rules on by default: 2024, 2014, or both. Every entry from those rules is available in the campaign.
  • New characters: the rules new characters in the campaign are built with.

Anything else (homebrew, or a single entry from the other rules) starts off and can be switched on one at a time.

Every Compendium entry has a Used In section listing your campaigns, each with a switch. As the DM, switch an entry on to allow it in that campaign (“this one homebrew species is fine”) or off to rule it out.

When a player brings a character into a campaign, everything that character’s sheet uses is switched on there automatically, so it works as built. The DM can switch any of it off afterwards.

The DM can turn on encumbrance, which shows item weights and carrying capacity on everyone’s sheet in that campaign.
